Quite interesting. I have done a lot of work with these stack models for a project on mathematically modeling an artificial leaf problem (e.g. see photo, it's not my work but similar). Same method, but with artificial materials of course, and my objective was to optimize absorption of UV in the photocatalyst, to produce as much O2 as possible.
