A tall up to 1 m, perennial species native to Europe. It thrives on quite shaded habitats and occurs in forests, parks, and ruderal waste areas. Flowering is July to August. The capitulum is small only about 1 cm across, yet obviously visible to small pollinators which frequently call on them.

Plants photographed near Oslo, Norway, 16 July 2010.

Ultraviolet light: Nikon D40X, Coastal Optics 60 mm f/4 APO lens, Baader U2" (Venus) filter, SB-140 flash.

The centre of the capitulum is fairly UV dark. The same holds for the exserted anther tubes. The ligules are highly UV-reflective. Phyllaries (bracts) are UV grey.
