Flowers photographed in ultraviolet and visible light. http://www.ultravioletphotography.com/content/index.php?/topic/120-achillea-millefolium-subsp-lanulosa-common-yarrow/ Seal Cove, Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA17 July 2012 Synonyms:Achillea borealis Bong.Achillea lanulosa Nutt.Achillea nigrescens (E. Mey.) Rydb.Comment:A. millefolium, a North American native, has many medicinal uses so it is frequently cultivated. There are also ornamental cultivars for the garden. The wild subspecies found in Maine, shown here, has quite UV-dark rays with a bright edge. The disk florets are slightly less dark with a UV-bright center. Compare it to the A. millefolium photographed in NJ which does not have a bright center in its disk florets or quite such a UV-bright ray edge. Reference:1.
